Large canopy tree to 22m tall and 1m trunk diameter. Dark brown, smooth bark. The branches are stout and tend to spread widely. Large, oval, leathery leaves are dark green, silvery underneath. Inconspicuous, pale-green flowers. Large, purple, plum-like, erect fruit, ripen March-November. Provides a favourite food for kereru.
It is recommended to have a minimum of 5–6 species in one planting area. This creates a more resilient ecosystem in the long term.
