Climbing forest vine. Lower stems are hard yet flexible, nearly black, and twine around tree trunks. They have dark scale leaves only. Stems in the canopy that are exposed to sunlight do not twine. They are branched, light brown, and bear green leaves in opposite pairs. Inflorescence is pale green, followed by red berries. Prefers moist soil with shade for its roots and head in the sun.
