Event details

WORKSHOP | Come along to our Engine Bay Garden in Hobsonville Point to learn how to set up a Wicking Bed using a re-purposed IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container).

A wicking bed is a raised garden bed with a water reservoir at the bottom that ‘wicks’ water up through the soil to the plant roots. These beds use 50% less water, reducing the need to water every day, making these systems extremely resilient to drought.  With this season’s predicted El Nino dry summer, we are expanding the number of wicking beds at our site to grow food this season.

Thanks to support from the Upper Harbour Local Board, some of the wicking beds will be available for local families who would like to care for one over summer.  Everyone is welcome and we look forward to connecting with our beautifully diverse community and learning from one another about different ways of growing, preparing, sharing and enjoying food.  Growing together is a wonderful way to build connections, share knowledge and celebrate the knowledge of our many cultures and traditions.

All materials and plants will be provided as well as ongoing teaching support.   For more information email Judith at gardenhub@kaipatiki.org.nz, or simply come along and join us.
